Mine Pool/Groundwater Remediation

Pilot Scale Water Treatment Study

An Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA) is currently being performed by Adrian Brown Consultants (AdrianBrown) to determine the most efficient and cost effective method of reducing surface water and groundwater metals concentrations resulting from discharges from the Wellington-Oro Mine Pool. The EE/CA will evaluate a number of potential remediation technologies and approaches including:

  • Mixing mine discharges with Breckenridge treated municipal wastewater sewage effluent;
  • Treating discharges with organic matter in a surface passive treatment lagoon;
  • Treating the water in the mine workings to improve discharge water quality
  • Reducing mine inflow and outflow to French Gulch to improve stream water quality; and,
  • Conventional treatment of mine discharges with a site specific treatment plant.

Some of the tests are ongoing and the remainder should be completed by March 2000. At that time one of the remediation alternatives will be recommended to the EPA. After EPA review and public comment, a final remediation approach will be selected shortly thereafter. Remediation of mine pool discharges could begin in the summer of 2000.
