Surface Waste Remediation

Before

As part of the surface waste remediation effort, a pile of roaster fines (about 5,000-6,000 cubic yards) containing the highest concentrations of lead and arsenic at the site was moved to a location with a higher elevation, where the roaster fines would not be in contact with groundwater. The roaster fines were covered with a protective low permeability cap (to reduce infiltration) and several inches of clean fill dirt. The pile is due to be revegetated in the spring of 1999. Adjacent tailings piles, were covered with placer tailings from the tops of the valley floor. The placer tailings do not contain elevated metals concentrations. Runoff controls were constructed to reduce surface water infiltration to mine wastes.

The surface wastes are estimated to be responsible for only 5 percent of the water contamination problem in French Gulch and Blue River. FROG is continuing to work toward a comprehensive cleanup of the site that would alleviate impacts to French Gulch from mine water.
